July 31, 2008 - Century Ride
Century Ride
I do a little cycling from time to time. Mostly it’s 30 miles here and 30 miles there and sometimes it’s on a spinner bike inside - whatever it takes to get my miles in. Last weekend, however, I rode a century ride. For those of you who do not know what a century ride is, it’s a 100-mile bike ride. It may sound insane and maybe it is but there is something almost soothing about doing something out of the ordinary. Every year in July, I watch the Tour de France, the 2,200 mile, 21 day bike race around France. Although few Americans are usually entered in the field, we tend to do very well each year. This year, Christian Vandevelde, originally from Lemont, Illinois, came in 5th place, just 3 minutes and 5 seconds behind the winner. Compared to the Tour de France rides each day, my 100-mile 1 day ride doesn’t sound so insane. Anyway, during my ride I was thinking whether or not the century concept could be applied to golf. Is it possible to play a century round of golf – 100 holes in 1 day? That would be something. I concluded that the weather and any other groups on the course would have to cooperate in order for a 100-hole day to be possible. We’ll see.
I just completed the write-ups for both the Kingsmill Resort & Spa in Virginia (www.kingsmill.com) and the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Pennsylvania (www.nemacolin.com). Look for these write-ups coming soon in our Travel Center. I look forward to returning to both of these resorts in the future. At Kingsmill, the par-3 course along the James River is a must play while the Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired architecture and experience at Nemacolin’s Falling Rock, which houses luxury accommodations, the golf clubhouse and locker rooms are a must see. At Nemacolin’s Falling Rock, check out the infinity edge pool that overlooks the Mystic Rock Golf Course.
Last week I happened to be in San Antonio and was able to play the Palmer Course at La Cantera Resort (www.westinlacantera.com). It was one of the most fun courses I have ever played with the constant elevation changes and views of San Antonio. Hopefully, we’ll have the opportunity to feature the Westin La Cantera Resort on our website. I would like to thank Mike and the other guys I met on the course from Wisconsin for letting me play through. I’ll be in Wisconsin the first full week of August. Mike, if you email me at information@mygolfbook.com and we have the chance to meet, the first round of drinks is on me.
We’ll be in the Midwest the first full week of August reviewing some great golf destinations. Look for the resort reviews in our Travel Center in the coming weeks. Please continue to send in ideas for resort reviews to information@mygolfbook.com. We appreciate your ideas.
We’re continuing to work on the Blogs/Forums. We essentially want the Sesame Street of forums so that everyone can easily participate. We’re getting closer so please bear with us. We will update the entire page once the Blogs/Forums are complete. For now, you can still use the other placeholder Blogs/Forums.
On the 2nd page of My Golf Book, you will notice that there is a number stamped onto the page. Each book has a unique number. These numbers and the books will soon be able to be registered on our website for chances at prizes, including balls, gift certificates and the like. Look for this feature coming soon.
If there is a question about our books or our website, please let us know.
Thanks for visiting our website.
Enjoy your game.
Chris
